Assateague Island State Park offers 350 oceanside campsites with flushing toilets, hot showers and drinking water. Assateague State Park is managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
Regular Season: Late April - End of October
Primitive Camping Season: November - Late April
Maximum two week stay. Can re-register after vacating the park for at least one week.
From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, a two-night weekend stay (Friday and Saturday) is required unless you are booking 7 or more nights.
Minimum three-night stay on holiday weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
Regular operating season campsites can be reserved up to one year in advance.
The exception to this is youth group sites that are being booked by non-passholding groups. These groups can reserve a site up to six months in advance.
One thing I love about Assateague State Park is the bath house -
it's there in the background.
Suitable for tents, trailers and RVs
Electric hookups are available in H Loop and pets are allowed in J Loop.
Youth Group Camping Area
Assateague Island State Park has two areas dedicated for youth group camping. Each site can accommodate up to 75 people.
At least one adult per five children is required.
There is a $2 fee per person per night for group sites in addition to the nightly campsite fee.
Be sure to check with Assateague State Park for current youth group camping regulations.
No amenities are provided during the primitive camping season!
No tent camping is allowed. According to Assateague State Park, only "self-contained units" are permitted. This reduces the options down to vehicles or campers that provide bathroom facilities and storage for grey water. Potable water is also not provided. Many other restrictions apply.
Pets are allowed from October 1 to April 1
All sites are first-come, first-served and utilize self-registration.
Please see Assateague State Park for current primitive camping restrictions, self-registration instructions and regulations.
Big Lighted Bath Houses
The bath houses also have mirrors and electrical outlets.
Don't forget to wear your sandals!
There are sinks in the bath house with hot and cold water as well as hand soap and hand dryers.
We recommend taking along some hand sanitizer just in case they run out of soap.
There is also a utility sink for washing dishes in the back of the bath house.
We use the water from the utility sink. Buying water gets too expensive and we can't taste the difference.
These are big and heavy.
Ground Camp Fire Ring
Some have grates and some do not. Bringing a grate is recommended if you plan on cooking over the fire.
Electric Hookups in H Loop
These go fast. Make sure you make your reservation well in advance.
Pets Allowed in J Loop
We always bring our dogs! There are only a handful of sites available and they go even faster than the electric hookup sites. We reserve our site a year in advance.
Great for kids! Check the interpretive programs schedule for activity times (posted on each bath house and in the ranger station). Most of the activities are free.
The camp store has souvenirs as well as ice, food and beverages.
Wi-Fi internet access is also available!
Guarded Swimming Area
Lifeguards on duty in the day use swimming area from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Memorial Day to Labor Day
Though we always camp for at least a week at a time, there's always more to do than we have time for.
Here's just some of the activities that keep Assateague Island campers busy:
